Redefining I Ching mobile Apps

The I Ching is an ancient divination method from China, based on a more than 1000 years old book. The app market where I Ching apps (and other niches like tarot, etc) belong it's full of low quality applications.

I started this project with the idea of redefine an I Ching app with a modern looking design, without the visual elements on these apps such magic and ocultism. With a clean UI design, from the main brand to every other element, the main idea was to create an app that looks like mainstream and not from that niche.

One of the main characteristics of trigram app is that it's completely free, without advertising or other mean for monetization.

The brand

The main icon is an abstraction of the Bagua, the eight symbols used in Taoist cosmology to represent the fundamental principles of reality. The gradient color of the icon it's one of the bases of the I Ching, that everything is in move and constant change.

The wordmark is a lowcase sans-serif construction to convey humility, clarity and simplicity.

The App

multiple screen trigram app

The main selling point of trigram was to reduce the clutter in these kind of apps resulting in a clean design, good use of typography and ease of use without too much unnecesary features.

The website was built using modern web technologies, JAM stack with NextJS and typescript. The Free online I Ching reading section of the website is server side rendered with a lambda function in charge of the I Ching castings.

The mobile app is developed in flutter.
